Leonberger History Austria

Everybody has of course heard of the Austrian Empress "Sissy"
who is said to have owned 7 Leonberger dogs.

But even if Empress "Sissy" was surely the most famous
Austrian Leoowner, the Austrian History is more than that.

This is out of the "Kynologisches Jahrbuch 1898" Austria;
the article refers to dog-breeding in generally.

This article refers to Leonberger breeding - 1908 - 1913 -
in Germany, Austria and Böhmen
(which belongs today to Poland / Czechy)

Breeding must have taken place in Austria end of the 19th century
(maybe earlier) as in the Leonberger Chronik several
Leo's listed by name - and this list is out of the magazine
"Hundesport & Jagd", dated Aug. 19, 1897.

Especially the Leo Abdel Rigo Austria is most likely an Austria Leo.

One of the old "Leonberger" magazines reported about the
dog show Vienna 1911.
7 Leonberger dogs out of the breeding from Baronin Pfungen, Gars, Niederösterreich; attended that show.
The dogs are mentioned by name and had been 15 ms old at that time.
The breeder received the "bronz. Staatsmedaille".
There is furthermore mentioned that "the dogs had been
- despite the fact of being very young -
of good quality with good coat and black mask,
just a bit too light-weighted.

The kennelname was "v. Gars" and the dogs
(mentioned in Leonberger Chronik) had been

Tell v. Gars
Omar v. Gars
Lena v. Gars
Oberon v. Gars
Irma v. Gars - Krondorf

Unfortunately there is nothing written about the parentdogs.

The Austrian Kennel-Club (ÖKV) is founded in 1909.
Maybe the "v.Gars-Leos" had been registered with the Austrian Kennel-Club.
The first dog-show in Austrai had been held 1863 - Vienna -
357 dogs where shown.

Maybe the Leonberger Friends of Austria know a bit more and
are willing to share their
knowledge with all the others !
