the Hungarian and Austrian Leo-History is most likely a rather similar one,
as articles out from old dog-magazines show, where breeding
in Hungary and Austria is mentioned.
Therefore you might go to the Austrian History, to read about that.

From the Finnish Leo-history is known that end of 19th century
Leos out of Russian breeding went to Finland - see Northeuropean History.

And this tells us of course too, that breeding took place in Russia at that time.
Another proof - out from the Leonberger Chronik, an article in the magazine
"Hunde-Sport und Jagd, Oct. 17, 1901"
about a dog-show in Chemnitz, 4 Leo-males and 1 female had been shown;
2 males where out of Russian breeding (neighter kennel- nor dogs names mentioned).

The Leonberger Breeding in Russia in the present:

Well, not too much is known but the little I know I will share
here with the others:

In the last few years went to Russia

Samuray v.d. Waranhoeve * Dec. 3, 1994 - from Belgium

Zenzi v. Schloßpark * Feb. 12, 1995- from Germany

Ramavan's Giacomo * Feb. 2, 1998 - from Finland

There are 13 Leonberger Breeders in Russia;
10 of the kennels are FCI-registered.

A Leonberger-Club exists too;
the International Dog Show Moskva was held in May;
the Leo's judge was a FCI-rec. judge (btw. one of the
judges who had judged the Leos at the World-Dog-Show 1999
in Mexico; this might help to finish the rumour about the
qualities of "judgement" in easteuropean countries).
