South-European
Leo- History

Italian History:

Il cane "Caprera" - the Leonberger owned by the Italian Hero Garibaldi. Well, I know that in the Italian
magazine "Argos" is an article about that, October 1988 - and I'll try to get this article (and hopefully an
English translation too).
The Italian Kennel-Club E.N.C.I was founded in 1882; maybe they have as well some information on
"famous dogs of famous humans" and as Garibaldi was a well-know Italian Hero there might be some
information available.
General information must be known as otherwise there would be no article on this story.

Leonberger Dogs exported to Italy

We all know of course that the Italian
Hero Garibaldi and King Umberto shared their life
with a Leonberger.

The Italian Website runned by Patty Viviani tells a
good deal about the more recent "Italien Leo-History"

www.leonberger-net.it

The first Leo in Italy - as far as know -
was shown at an exposition -Monaco 1870.

Then we have to run over the centuries to
the year 1961.

Imports Germany:

Bodo v. Tuttlingen - 1961

Zimba v. Königstein

Beppo-J-Attu v.d. Schwarzwaldpforte

Conny v.d. Helmstadt

Ophelia v. Loh

Quinta v. Loh

Imports Switzerland:

Annabella v. Galm
Arras v. Krametsbühl x Bora v.d. Danubia

Maja v. Bernerland
Aladin v. Guten Löwen x Cora v.d. Schwäbischen Alb

and of course within the last few years some more Leos

from other countries and other kennels as well

The Switzerland-History

It is know that end of the 19th century the Leonberger had been bred in Switzerland.
I do not know any details yet - but from the Northeuropean History, Finland, we
know that dogs had been exported from Switzerland to Finland.

The Spanish History

There are Leonberger breeders in Spain - and Leos had been imported from
France and Belgium.

I do not know anything about an "early" history - but I maybe I'll get some
more information on this soon.
